DEFENCE OF THE DOMINION.
Mr. JAS. ALLEN ADVOCATES EXEMPTIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Oliriatdiurch, Last Night. In an interview on tlhe defence ot the Dominion, Mr. Jaanes Allen, M.P., advocated a system of exemptions in connection with training proposals. If exemptions included the unfit, those em* ployedi on the raiways, and in post and telegrapli departments, as well as those who are engaged in the daily distribution of food and those who are actual breadwinners should be exempt. He estimated that nearly 50 per cent, of those available Should be exempted', and irom l 30,000 to £15,000 be provided for training purposes. As a result of calculation lie felt sure the cost of training this number and of the defence of the Dominion wouldi not cost more than £400,000 annually.
