A HISTORIC SPOT.

EXPLANATION BY MR. McNAB. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Robert McNab writes to the New Zealand Times:— Sir—Under the heading, "A Little Late." you publish this morning a Napier telegram as follows: "Mr. McNab's claim to have identified the spot in Grass Cove, Queen. Charlotte Sound, where one of Captain Cook's boat's crew was 'massacred, is a little late in the day," and then it goes on to tell that Mr. Russell Duncan photographed the spot- some years ago, etc. If you look back to your issue of vesterday you will see that the identification relates to an instrument found at the place, and <n#t to the place itself. It read: "Mr. McNab identified the latter from accounts a* a sword used by Midshipman Rowe, who was* in charge of the boat. The identification clears up the controversy regairdine the spot of the massacre." A hurried rpid'n? of the telegram, continued Mr. McNab, has created in the mind of someone at Napier an erroneous impression of jts meaning, and the "little late" telegram to you wai the result. Bfffore <w'nff over to Queen Chfiriotte. I niul full information retr.irrt;nu the claims of Grass Cove sw>r>lied bv n™ earlier investigator than Mr. Russell. The some gentleman also expressed the hope' that I would be able to settle the controversv regarding tfrfl site. With the help of Dr. Redman, the Rev. Mr. Smith and Mr. B. Cromoton Smith, of Picton. and through the ident'fication of the relics, my friends' wish has been gratified.
