TEACHERS' CLASSIFICATION

AN EMPHATIC PROTEST In reference to the teacher*" ciassilication scheane recently adopted by the Education Board, Mr. S. Turkington wrote as follows or 14th July, and tilie letter came befoiv the Board yesterday : "1 here thank ju for the efficiency marks, which are .i> hand. With the inaiks a\.airded me I aim disgusted and dissatisfied, and in my opinion these marks contradict the inspectors' reports that lhave been given me since ISS3. in 1883 Dr. Hislop inspected ana spent three days at the Burnham Industrial school where I had charge of some 80 boys. The Doctor said, • Tiie organisation and discipline of these boys is the best I have seen.' This was not too much for him to say of a teacner who had spent two years in a military scnool where I was trained with the Prince Imperial. I respectfully ask your Board to consider these marks, and compare •them with tlhe inspectors' reports, copies of whirib I can send you to better enable your Board to come to a just decision. It is only my long service towards a pension that prevents my leaving the profession to which I have devoted my life. I accept the marks as an insult, and I fail to understand why such an insult has. been offered, as the inspectors' reports have been good and satisfactory." The inspector remarked that Mr. Turkington had no reason to complain, as he had been placed fairly high in the classification scheme. Mr. Cargill moved: That Mr. Turkington be informed t'hat the Board wishes that all teachers having objections to the marks allotted to them rader the dasification scheme shall discuss the matter with tiie inspector prior to appealing to the Board, and that Air. Turkington be requested in future to use more courteous language in 'his communications to the Board. Mr. Morton seconded the motion, which was carried.
