EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. j The meeting of the Education Board was resumed yesterday, when all the members were present. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported in reference to matters referred to it and arising out of correspondence. The principal recommendations were:—That repairs asked at the Central School be referred to the chairman, with power 10 act, and that the committee be informed that the Board does not provide funds for swings; that the request for culvert at Korito be referred to Mr. Morton.for report; that the necessary hedge plants, wire and staples be supplied to the Tarurutangi committee; that the Bird committee be informed that the Board does not supply swings, nor acknowledge work unless authorised, but. :he Board will consider payment of the amount for certain work mentioned in the committee's letter; that the Waiva committee's letter in reference to a flagstaff required, and repairs to residence, anil erection of WA&h-hou.sc and bathroom there be referred to Mr. Young with power to act; j that the Waitara Committee be informed that the Board does not supply swings; that the letter of the Koru committee re fencing and letting part of the school i,*ite be referred to Air. Adlam for a report; that the letter from. Whangsmomona committee re fencing and rent of reserve be referred to Mr. Kennedy to arrange; that the Huiakama committee be informed that the Board does not subsidise committees for erecting flagstaffs, trimming trees or erecting woodsheds ; that the Kaimata and Waitui committees be informed that the Board does not supply ornamental trees, and that the matte'r of fencing agricultural plots at Kaimata be referred to tiie Director of Technical Education to deal with; that the matter of repairs to Waiongona School and residence be left in the hands of the chairman; that the Marco School be granted wire for fencing in school igardens; that an increase of £5 per annum be made in the salaries of the' two cadettes in the office, Misses Jones and Gilbert. The report was adopted.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE. ' The following teachers were granted sick leave:—Miss Mclsaac, West End; Miss E. Bieheno. Uruti; Mrs. Geddes, Stratford; Miss Bayly, West End. RESIGNATIONS. 'The resignations of Mr. J. H. Rice, Tarata, and Mr. E. Armitage, Tonga-porutu-Okau, were accepted. TRANSFERS.^ It was decided to ask the teachers recommended by the inspectors if they will accept the positions to which' it is suggested they shall be transferred. The following appointments were made:—Kahui, Miss A. 1. Maekay, sole teacher; Upper Mangorei; Mi-s Yickers, sole teacher; Matan. Mrs. Winthrop, sole teacher; Purangi, Miss A. Hamertu.-i, sole teacher; Tikorangi, Miss Elsie Andrews, assistant;- 'Waihi. Mr. Wagststf, assistant; all appointments dating -from Ist September next.
OPUA SCHOOL. Mr. H. Sinclair, secretary of the Opua School Committee, asked if the Hoard had any objection to the school being worked a.s a half-time school in conjunction with lhaia road, providing Uie committee secured the con-cut of parents concerned, lie understood that there | were seven or eight children not attending any school, anl they would attend if I a school were opened on lhaia road. T-lie i attendance at Opua was -mall, and they | could not hope to keep a teaidier unless! there was some improvement. Mr. Young will make, enquiries, and j report to next meeting. waiw. I Mr. 11. J. Ovenden. chairman of the ) Waihi committee, wrote that Mr. Mauu" White had offered a .section of four acres for enlarging the school ground. The Chief Inspector reported tilat Uie school was overcrowded, and additional accommodation was certainly required. The matter of enlarging the school ■ site- was referred to Mr. Halcombe for report. GENERAL Letters from the Marco and Bird committees, and from Mr. TT. -Toll, re school .sites, were referred to the Reserves Committee. Frve residents of the Truti district, near Mt. Messenger, petitioned, for the establishment of a school on the site there, which is very centrally situated Referred to Mr. Halcombe for report. The letter from the Moa School Committees' Association, in reference. to the leasing of school reserves was referred to the chairman to reply to. A copy of a complaint received from the Rowan School Committee will be forwarded to the teacher for her remarks. The Board confirmed the action of the Tariki and Makahu committees in temporarily closing their schools. The following appointments on school committees were confirmed: Tataraimaka, Mr. J. Ulyde; Hniroa, .Mr. W. Riffor'.l; York. Mr.'C. F. A. Volzke; Hurimoana, Mr. Ostler. It was decided that a householders meeting be called for the purpose of electing a school committee and arranging the Oeo school district, the meeting to°be held on August 10th, Mr. Young i attending on behalf-of the Board.
The Purangi committee was granted permission to reduce the -mid-day recess by half-an-hour, and to release the school at 3 p.m. during the winter month-. Mr. Young, who had been appointed to enquire into the'work a-ke.l for at the Opunake School, recommended the gravelling of the school ground and erecting about 30 yards of six feet fencing at the residence," the total cost to the Board being about £l2 10-?. Mr. J. R. Sullivan .of the teaching stall of the Central School, thanked the Hoard for its appreciative resolution passed at the former meeting, adding: "1 may state that the little progress I have made luas been effected by the many opportunities given by the Board to any teacher desirous of advancing himself in his profession.." , The Board rejected the -following remit suggested by Mr. Cargill for discussion at"the forthcoming Conference:— •'That an uncertificated teavher who has had ten years' teaching experience slnl! upon passing an examination as to lus ability in teaching by three inspectors lie , entitled to a perpetual licen-e. provided that no suclh teacher can be appointed to a. school higher than grade 3.'' tirade 3 is a school'with an average- attendance; of from 20 to 35 pupils. I NOTICE OF MOTION, ■Mr. Trimble gave notice to move at next meeting—"That -tanding committees of the Board be not. re-appointed.'"
