COLONIAL SHIPPING COMPANIES

"UP-TO-DATE IN EVERYTHING." LUNCHEON ABOARD THE ZEALANDIA. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received July 27, 9 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The entrance of the Huddart, Parker and Co.'s liner Zealandia upon the Cana-dian-Australian service was celeuruced by a luncheon aboard the vessel to-day. There was a large gathering of shipping representatives. Mr. Appleton, managing director of Huddart, Parker and Co., said that both he and Sir James *Mills (managing director of the Union Company) were proud of establishing the connecting link between the two gems in the Crown of the British Empire. They had not tenure of service. Still, they were in it "for better or for worse," and they were going the "whole hog." If they got the mail contract they would endeavor to make the service a better one. Mr. Wihitson, Sydney manager of the Union Company, replying to the toast of ' ; The Union Company," said the directors of the company had' always considered that trade would follow extension of its operations. They endeavored to always be in advance of requirements and be up-to-date in everything. He thought that policy had been realised. As New Zealand had prospered so had the company. Its red funnel was seen not only in New Zealand and the Commonwealth, but in far-off London and Canada. It supported over fifteen thousand people. The service offered a splendid opportunity for the developmen; of trade between Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, but, more than that, it was a link in the great chain of routes which ; covered the whole of the British Empire.
