Mr. J. Cameron, organising secretary of. the Anti-Asiatic League, who has been on a visit to New Plymouth, leaves today for Wellington. Mr. J. H. Rice has, owing to ill-health, resigned his position of headmaster of the Tarrfta school, and wishes to be re-' lieved at the end of the present mouth.
1 It is said- that the Hon. R. McXab will he a candidate at the next general election for either Palmerston North or Hawke's Bay in the Government interest. ! The Rev. S. J. Serpell has beeji invited |to the Masterton -Methodist charge in place of the Rev. C. C. Porter, who resigned, and he has accepted the 'position subject to appointment by the conference. Mr. Porter is applying for admission to the Presbyterian ministry. I The death occurred at New Plymouth , last night of Mr. Walter McCann, who i had been on' the staff of Messrs. Burgess, Fraser and Co. for some time. Deceased, who was but thirty-two years of age, j-had recently undergone an operation. Messrs A. Morton and W. L. Kenned; will represent the Taranaki Education ! Board in the conference of boards at Wellington next month. Mr. Wade, the chairman, was selected in the first instance, but regretted his inability lo travel. Mr. Thomas Holland, of Onehunga, celebrated the hundredth anniversary of his birth last week, having been bora at Lancashire on 20th Jul}', 1810. He arrived in the Dominion sixty years ago, and is at present residing with his daughter, Mrs. Constance. I Mr. V. H. Long, formerly teacher at the Purangi and Mdtau schools, is visiting Sydney. He proposes to return in l about six months. The Education Board I decided yesterday that on his return he j will be given every consideration in th.t event of his desiring to re-enter tlu Board's service. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday afternoon of the Hon. Henry Scotland, M.L.C. The deceased gentleman, who was "residing at the Occidental j Hotel, was in his ninetieth and had I been suffering during the past few days! from an attack of bronchitis, but death was due to syncope. The deceased was I born at Muswell Hill, London, in? 1821, j and was the youngest son of George' Scotland, C.8., Chief Justice of Trinidad. He was a barrister by profession, and was educated at St. John's College, Oxford. He arrived in New Zealan 1 in' 1850, resided for some time in Xew Plv-1 mouth, and was called to the Legislative { Council in 18(58. His widow, who is a; , present in Wellington, survives him. |
