THE PRICE OF BUTTER. Wellington, Tuesday. A new turn was given in the local butter g wa,r to-day when the price of certain brands advanced y 4 d wholesale, to sell at Is Id per pound retail. All standard brands of butter are now on the same footing as to price—ls Id per pound. It is stated by those in the butter trade that to supply retailers with butter under ll%d per pound entails a loss at the factories. The public has been getting the benefit of the •ompetition among wholesale suppliers. Prices in London keep up well the wholesale average price there being for great quantities l%d per pound, so that in Wellington, to-day consumers are paying less for their own butter thaa the English consumer. In times past this has not always been the case. It has happened tlhat London retailers hfive bought New Zealand butter cheaper at the time than New Zealand shop-keepers could buy it in the country of origin. Usually at tliis time of the year, butter is locally much dearer than Is id per pound. NEW ZEALAND EXPORTS. Wellington, Tuesday. The value of New Zealand's principal products passed through the Customs for during the fortnight ending July 15 is estimated at £028,720, compared with £1,274,621 for the full month of July,' 1909.
