By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent. WAREA. The third of the series of euchre parties in aid l of (lie hall funds was held last Wednesday. Wet weather prevailed, but still there was a fair attendance. .The eent]enieivs prize was won by Master B° Judge and the ladv s prize by Miss Fanny Corbett. Afterwards the room was cleaved for dancing. A farewell social will lie teiulorcu oiv Wednesday evening to Mrs. -Judge, who is about to leave the district. • PUNIHO. A farewell social will <be given to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Marr, of Puiiiho, in the sehool room, on Thursday night. Mr. Marr, who has been manager of the Puiiiho creamery for a. good nunibei of years, is leaving the district. A Sunday School has been started here by the Rev. Mr. Braddock, who will be j assisted by Mrs. Hill, Mrs. M. D. Rodgers and Miss Pi. Gibbons.
EG MONT VILLAGE. The Mungorei Dairy Co. have been unfortunate enough to lose another of their horses this week. The sou of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Olson took second prize at the baby show 'last week, being beaten by the champion baby in the show only. Mr. R. J. Erewin was pursued by kis usual run of bad luck 011 Wednesday 1 evening with regard to the weathei, 1 which was wretched, and doubtless kept I manv intending patrons at home. The I pictures shown were of a very high order and merited a mush, larger audience. .Tust at the conclusion of the performance the end of the ether tube blew out, and caused considerable consternation amongst the audience, but no damage was done. On Thursday evening the Mutual Improvement Society held its first open ni.irht for the session. Despite the bad weather, there was a large attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Mr. A. Morton, president of the Society, occupied the chair. Mi . Geo. Marsh 1 ,orchestra commenced tho proceedings with a selection. Then followed a deliau-. on "Should the sale of the pea-rifle be! •prohibited?" Mi. R. G. Marsh, seconded bv Mr. G. F. Dewhirst, took the affirmative, and Mr. H. W. Baxter, with Mr. 11. Currie. the negative side of the question. The vote was in favor of the affirmative side. A miscellaneous programme, then followed, composed of the following 'items: —Song, Mr. G. K sons, i Mr. H. C. Fcnton; reading, Mr. H. \V. Baxter; reading (original essay), Mr. R. ! (;, Marsh; recitation, Mr. J. Currie; veI citation. Mr. O. M. Inmau: recitation, I Mr. A. Morion. Quite the gem of the ' evening was Mr. A. Morton -1 tendering 1 of his recitation, "The last days of Hereulaneum." a powerfully dramatic and vividlv realistic description of the ernpI tion and subsequent earthquakes. The piece lost nothing at Mr. Morton's hands, and the audience fully appreciated its merits. Then .followed an orchestral | selection, "Zampbn." and another debate, v "la life worth living?'' Messrs Foster i iuifil Innran argued the affirmative and Mr E Dewhirst and Mrs. FT. W. Baxter the negative. Mr*. Baxter's humorous ad'lre e 3 was a fitting conclusion to 'the entertainment. The" vote _in the latter debate was in favor of life, but by a. comparatively narrow margin when the subiect is taken into consideration.
