MAXAWATU AND IiOKUVVaiENUA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, Saturday. The Maori team defeated a combined Maiawatu and llorowhenua team to-day by 15 points to 0. The game gave the spectators a glimpse of what the visitors were capable of doing with the ball, for the combined team, although lacking combination, were able to extend them; in fact, they were unlucky not to have scored, on several occasions. The I Maoris started well, and with several brilliant passing rushes lett the Home, | team standing still, registering two tries' in quick succession, Kaipara and Wini-j 'ata crossing, and Cunningham convert-1 ing. The combined team individually shaped well. The forwards time and 1 again forced the play into the Maoris') twenty-five, but, opportunities were lost through lack o? combination in the, backs. Their efforts were powerless against the opposition. Just before the spell concluded, from a centre kick, the Maori backs gained possession, and a brilliant piece of passing among the backs enabled Nuku to cross. Cunningham converted, the score at half time, being 15 to nil. The Manawatu and Horowhenua men opened the second spell in a determined manner, and worked play into the Maoris' territory. The latter relieved with a number of passing rushes, which, fortunately for the combined team, started well down the field. The home team were not to be denied. The forwards were playing well. Munro, Mullins and Carroll raced the ba : ll up the field, the oval going out at the corner. From a scrum, Rapata dashed across. Maoris 15, Combined 3. Shortly after this the combined team secured a free kick near the half-way line, 'Hughes sending the ball across with a brilliant kick. Maoris 15, Combined teams 6. Manawatu were now having all the best of the game, but, there were brilliant flashes of passing i by the Maoris, which electrified the] crowd as well as the players. The, l match was a good one, and the visitors certainly upheld the standard of football with which they have been credited. SATURDAY COMPETITION. Civil Service forfeited to Rovers on Saturday. THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. BRITAIN v. AUCKLAND. | Auckland, Saturday. The Northern Union football match played here to-day between the British and Auckland teams resulted in a Win| for the Britishers by 52 points to 0. In the first' spell the visitors were irresistible, their back play being brilliant, while the forwards were very dashy. Lomax was the star player of the match. The first spell ended with the scores: Britain 41, Auckland 3. This was composed of nine tries, seven bei'ag converted. In the secpnd spell, the British team took matters easily, with the result that only 11 points were added by them to six by the local team. Tries were scored bv B. Jenkins, Jukes (2), Davies (3), Riley'(2), Leytham, Kershaw, Lomas and Wistanley. Lomas converted seven tries, and Leytham one. The team will leave for Rotorua by Monday's express, and return to Auckland dn time to play a match against a New Zealand team next Saturday.
