THE USELESSNESS OF SINKING FUNDS. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received July 24, 5.5 p.m. London, July 23. The Economist agrees that Sir George Reid's views that Australian debts are on a. different footing to war and armament debts, but opines that in times of prosperity surpluses should be applied to the reduction of debts. Most so-called sinking funds, the paper continues, do not represent a net surplus income over expenditure, therefore they are quite useless.
