Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, was present at the Taranaki Hospital Board's meeting yesterday. Mr. W. Hutehings, an old and respected resident of Wellington, died at his residence, Sussex Square, on Saturday morning. Mr. H. W. Jackson, late of Pa via, and at present headmaster of the Taoroa School, has been appointed special assistant at the Eltham D.H. School. Mr. W. H. Jackson, who last week completed his '2lst .year (is headmaster of the Masterton District High School, has been presented by the committee, pupils and friends with an illuminated address in recognition of his long and faithful service.

The Rev. Father Clancy, S.M., has been appointed to assist the Rev. Father Ainsworth in the administration of the parish of Hokitika. Father Clancy was until recently in charge of the 'Nelson parish, and has latterly been engaged in the Wellington diocese in the work of collecting in aid of the Stoke Orphanage.

At the conclusion of the monthly practice of the Fire Brigade on Tuesday evening the following service decorations were awarded: —Custodian G. Lambert, five years' medal; Secretary H. Ford, two years' bar, completing nineteen, years' service; Lieutenant A. Boon, two years' bar, completing thirteen years' service.

The Rev. G. P. Davys, M.A., near of St. Peter's, Wellington, has resigned l is position, and will leave for Ei.glund in November next. The Mayor of Dunedin (Mj. T. Cole) has received a letter from ®brd Islington's private secretary stating that His Excellency will be in the Soutii Tsnnd during the second week in August, End is desirous of taking the earliest opportunity of paying an official visit to Dunedin. His Excellency proposed leaving Christchurch on Tuesday, August 10, arriving in Dunedin, at 4 p.m. on the same day. He will stay in Duruiin vntil Friday, August 12. A Press wire from Palmerston says that the death is announced from Foxton of Mrs. Robinson, relict of the late Captain Robinson. Deceased, who was 84 years of age, arrived in New Zealand in the ship London in 1840. She was married in Wellington in 1840, and went to Foxton to live. She was noted for her genial disposition and hospitality offered in the early t! iys. Among her guests during that p riod were Lord Robert Cecil (the late Marquis of Salisbury) and Sir George Grcv. There is much shuffling of staffs on the Wellington daily papers. Mr. P. C. Freeth has vacated the editorial chair of the 'New Zealand Times, Mr. F. Kirby, the assistant editor, taking his place. , Mr. G. F. Hendry, of the reporting staff, has accepted a position on the Auckland Herald. Mr. F. Mr. Charles Weston has had to be placed on the sick-list. Mr. F. Cliorlton, of the reporting staff of the Evening Post, has left to take a position in Marlborough, and Mr. Ilill. son of Mr. S. Hill, until recently of this town, has joined as a junior reporter.
