Received July 20, 10.30 o m. New York, July £.O. It is stated that a cotton ''squeeze" has secured to the manipulators one and a half million pounds sterling profit. CANADIAN RAILWAY STRIKE. Received July 20, 10.30 p.m. Ottawa, July 19. Employees throughout the Grand Trunk (Canada) railroad service struck. Half the passengers and all the goods trains are at a standstill. SHIPPING FREIGHTS. London, July 10. Mr. Coghlan, Agent-General for New South Wales, has requested the Australian Shipping Conference to reduce freights to New South Wales to the rates ruling before the coal strike, on the ground that several lines have already recouped the additional expenditure due to the strike. DISMISSAL OF A CADET. London, July 19. The Court of Appeal has decided that Mr. Archer Shee was entitled to have the grounds of the dismissal of his son, recently a cadet at the Naval College, Osborne, submitted to trial by jury. The Admiralty resisted a public enquiry.
A CLAIM AGAINST RUSSIA. London, July ID. A claim for a considerable sum has. been made, through Sir Edward Grey, in connection with the seizure by a Russian gunboat of the Hull trawler Onwards. FIRE OX A STEAMER. Hamburg, July 19. A fire slightly damaged the steamer Sonneberg. MUTINY OF SIKHS. London, July 10. The Morning Post's Shanghai correspondent reports that ninety sikh police have mutinied, it is believed owing to incitement by native teachers. STRIKE AT NEWCASTLE. London, July IG. Three thousand railway men have struck at Newcastle in consequence of the dismissal of a shunter. CORONATION NEXT JUNE. London, July 19. The Coronation will take place next June, but the exact date has not yet been fixed. PRESS CABLEGRAMS. London, July Iff. The Council of Empire Press Union reports that a further reduction in press tariffs is imperative. Wireless telegraphy is at present too slow for press purposes. STORMS IN FRANCE. Paris, July 19. Thunderstorms and rain have ruined the crops in 'Northern France, and the vintage is a failure. CLOAIvMAKERS' STRIKE. New York, July 19. Some cloakmakers in New York have yielded to the demands of the strikers. Others are engaging new hands. VEGETABLE FIBRE IN WOOL. London, July IS. At a meeting of the committee enquiring into the vegetable fibre in wool it was reported that a noticeable improvement was observable in the packing. The colonies had responded excellently to the committee's recommendations. HEAVY LEGACY DUTIES. London, July 19. Sir J. Scliroedor's estate, which was sworn as under ,€2,000,000, pays £480,000 in legacy duties.
