THE CRIPPEN TRAGEDY.
DEATH OF FIRST WIFE. POLICE INVESTIGATIONS. By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright ■New York, July 18. The police at Salt Lake City are investigating the cause of the death of Crippen's first wife. Bell, her brother in New York, quotes her letters declaring Crippen compelled her to undergo operations. After the birth of a child, he again forced her to be operated' on, and she was sure it would be the last time. After she died Bell visited Salt Lake City, but Mrs. Crippen had died. SEARCHING FOR CRIPPEN'. London, July 18. Four women friends of Mrs. "Crippen are searching steamers as they arrive at New York. Detectives examined 1600 persons on board the Lusitania. The Daily Mail declares that the police were investigating; the missing woman's case nine davs before thev allowed Crippen to escape. Miss Neve's father believes that Crippen is in France or Belgium, because he is an excellent linguist. He fears his daughter's life may also be sacrificed'. The police have stopped digging in search of further remains. INQUEST ON MRS. CRIPPEN. London. Julv 18. At the inouest on Mrs. Cripnen. John iNash. theatrical manager, testified that the suspicions of himself and others arose in February bv seeing a tvpiste, who was in comnanv with Crippen, weari ins; deceased's brooch at the music hall benevolent dinner. Witne=s afterwards •went to America, whence he returned on June 28, and had an interview with Crippen. who could not remember the place in California at which he alleged his wife died. lint/ said he had' her ashes in a safe. Witness informed the police. Inspector Drew said he called at Crippen's house on Julv 8. and saw Miss Neve wear in a a brooch apparently deceased's. The girl took him to Crippen's | office. Crinpen alleged that his wife had eloped with a rival, and allowed the Inspector to search the house, but nothing was discovered. After the couple had disappeared he found human flesh without bones in the cellar. The inquest was adjourned.
