TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of members 01 the Taranaki Jockey Club was held at the office of tlie secretary (Mr. E. P. Webster) last night. In the absence of xhe president, Mr. C. Lepper (chairman of committee) was voted to the c hair. There was a good attendance of members. ANNUAL REPORT.
The balance-sheet, as audited, was submitted, but was not available for publication. The chairman read the follow-; ing report of the committee:—Your com-1 mittee has again to submit a very satisfactory balance-sheet for the year's working, which shows a net profit of £1583 Is 9d, after making a. liberal al- J lowance for depreciation on buildings and plant, spending £274 6s fid on) permanent improvements, and £56 12s in securing the freehold of several see-j tions immediately adjoining the lawn.j The committee has undertaken during the year the enlargement of the racing | track by throwing out the rails at the! High School corner, and at the corner, running out of the straight. This will, besides improving the curves, give a. gain of over 2% chains in the distance.' The new stewards' stand and stables! have been completed at a total cost of: £1122 12s 6d, and have very much im-l proved the appearance of the club's property. Our only liability is £435 4s 6d to the bank. The membership of the Club now stands at 112. The racing at the two meetings held during the year, proved very satisfactory, the nominations and acceptances snowing an increase over last year. The committee' concluded by expressing again its complete satisfaction with the manner in which the duties of the secretary had been carried out by Mr. Webster. . ELECTION OP OFFICERS. Officers were elected as follows: —I President, Hon. 0. Samuel, M.L.C; vicepresident, Mr. Newton King; judge, to be appointed by the committee; treasurer, Coldnel Ellis; clerk of the scales, Mr. Goldwater; stewards, Messrs. A'. Alexander, W. Birdling, E. Elliott, T. Elliott, Newton King, J. Hempton, W. L. Newman, A. L. Thomson, F. Watson, H. Linn, A. R. Standish; committee, Messrs. C. M. Lepper, E. L. Blundell, Newton King, A. R. Standish, 0. W. Sole, W. C. Weston, L. A. Nolan, J. H. Hempton, A. L. Thomson, A. Alexander,' L. R. Webster, and F. E. Orbell; hon. surgeon, Dr. E. F. Fookes; auditor, Mr. H. Stocker. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. W. L. Newman, the retiring president., The chairman announced thajt'-.Mr.' Newman had consented to act again as; totalisator steward. j
Mr. King moved a vote of thanks to the secretary, for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his duties. The Club, he remarked, was on the upgrade, and much of it was due to the secretary. The chairman concurred, and the vote was carried by acclamation. Mr. Webster, in returning thanks, remarks that in the past two years the profit and loss account credit had improved from £I6OO to £3400 odd. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, Mr. C. M. Lepper was re-elected chairman.
