BREAD.

To the Editor. , ■Sir,—l noticed in your Friday's issue a letter signed "Honesty," asking if the; twicers had formed a combine to fix the; price of bread. Of course they liave.j Why should not the bilkers have a union to protect their interests the same as other trades? They lnive gone into the baking business for a living, and if tlieyj can mate a little more, good and well. > Most of us would do the same. I'lie most surprising part is that all 'the town; and district will quietly submit to payi the price that some eight or nine persons in the baking trade say they shall, know-j ing r ull well that the price is from a, penny to threepence per loaf higher thaw it is in neighboring towns. The consumers have the remedy in their own hands, without doing an injustice to anyone. The outlay when divided amongst tlie consumers would be trifling to commence a co-operative bakery. The only thing is to start on proper lines and have a goort

managing committee to look after the concern. There would be no fear of failure. It is one of these things that is everybody's bu-iness and nobody's, one cares to take it uj), as it is very often a thankless task working to benefit others. Co-operative trading is the most commonsense and fairest way ol trading, only we don't seem to be educated up to it. Everyone is doing a grumble and growl about the price of bread, but this makes no difference to the bakers, who will make no move to alter matter.-.—l am, etc.. "DU PAIN'."
