MRS. HETTY GREEN IN THE WITNESS BOX.

Mrs. Hetty Green, "America's financial queen," as she is called, who, in addition to her other activities, is an indefatigable litigant, has lost her first case before a jury. The news that the "wealthiest woman in the world" was about to enter the witness-box attracted an enormous crowd to the New. York City Court. The aged lady appeared clad in a rusty garment with a large rent carelessly sewed together. iShe was very voluble, and occasionally winked at the jury. She ignored the Judge completely, and chatted with the reporters, telling them that the jury were "a handsome set of men, who could be relied on to give a just verdict." "I have never lost a case in my life," she added. Called to order by the Judge, Mrs. Green assumed an air of mock dignity, and proceeded to testify in her own defence against a claim brought by a safe deposit company for £llO for the storage of eleven boxes. "-I shouldn't think of paying such a sum for a lot of old boxes," Mrs. Green declared. "Five and forty years ago my father left me these boxes. They contain papers belonging to my son." When the jury, after a short deliberation, returned a verdict against Mrs. Green, she exclaimed: "The idea! But there is no justice in this world for a woman."
