AMERICANS' OPENING MATCH. VISITORS EASILY DEFEATED. j WELLINGTON 22, AMERICANS 0. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ' \ Wellington, Last Night. Yesterday tUe American Universities Rugby fifteen met a strong Wellington representative team in the first match of their tour, and were beaten by 22 to nil.

The visitors do not as yet play a good Rugby game, but are evidently keen to learn, and are most certainly good sportsmen. Thier work shows much crudeness, but they play a strenuous game and put any amount of vigor into. it.

Tries were scored for Wellington by Avery, Irvine, Roberts, Pyle, Perry and Kinvig, two of which were converted by Ryan. The visitors never looked like scoring, and Wellington could have put up many more points had they tried very hard. WANGANUI DEFEATS MANAWATU. Wanganui, Last Night. The representative Rugby match, Wanganui v. Manawatu, took place here on Saturday. The weather was fair and the ground in good order, despite previous rain. There was a large attendance. Manawatu were the heavier team, especially in the forwards, but the kicking of the Wanganui backs was good, although their tackling was somewhat weak.

The visitors played with the sun at their backs in the first spell, especially in the latter half. From a rush, Mullin got over, Briscoe converting. In the second spell Wanganui had decidedly the best of the game, their backs getting on some good passing and kicking well. Manawatu were kept in their own twenty-five most of the time. Meuli scored a fine try from a passing rush. Southcombe converted, equalising the scores. Play was exciting, but Wanganui still kept up the attack, mainly by good line kicking, a»d Signal notched a try from another passing rush. Seeling converted, making the score—

Wanganui 10 Manawatu 5 Play was fairly even until Wanganui again attacked, but were unable to score, and the game resulted as above. MAORIS, BEAT OTAGO REPS. Dunedim. Saturday. The. Otago v. Maoris football match, played here to-day, was witnessed by 5000 spectators. The visitors inflicted a rather decisive defeat on the Otago reps., winning by 17 points to 8. Maoris secured their first try a few minutes after starting, Rogers scoring after bril-

liant passing among the backs. Piki scored.a second try as the result of a forward scramble. Neither try was converted. Otago attacked, and Paton placed a penalty goal, and then, from a fine loose rush by Patterson and Paton, the former scored under the posts, and Eckhold converted. The scores at halftime were Otago 8, Maoris 0. The visitors put up most attractive and dashing play in the second spell, and tries were scored by Rogers (unconverted) and Hall (converted), while Cunningham kicked a penalty goal, the final score being Maoris 17, Otago 8. The visitors gave a splendid exhibition of fast and clean football, their back play being of a very resourceful and dashing nature. Otago's only strength was in the for-' wards, the backs being lamentably weak. NEW PLYMOUTH v. STRATFORD HIGH SCHOOLS. On Saturday afternoon senior and junior teams representing the above schools et at Stratford, and after keenly contested games, in both instances the visitors were victorious. The luck was on New Plymouth's side, evidently, as the *o«s was won in Wh cnses. and the adrsintagp of the -'•■•>. din the first spell 'T e-"l)i-n""(' r '""' •■'■■.vnrs scored 5 points (a try H {'hrk. nf'tor a very finerrni. :\iul a convert pd by floss) to nil,' while the juniors registered a similar, score against a trv by the home team (5-3).

It is pleasing to hear that the eontests were all that could be desired in the -nature of good, clean sporting expositions of the Rugby art.
