STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Ouv Own Correspondent.) iSlniU'uni, La.-i Night. Stratford practically oiupcieu itself yesterday into Hawera, the attractions being the 'Show and the football match, a combination which was sufficiently attractive to counteract the evident signs of wet weather. Of the show noumg but praise is heard, and the promoters and ciiose responsible deserve the congratulations that are universal tor tneir enterprise in starting the show, and for the management displayed. From a business standpoint it is a great thing for Hawera, and there are many people in Stratford to-day who are wondering | how it is that they never had the forethought to initiate the movement. Stratford had the chance, and there is little doubt but that from its central position the show would have been successful. But Stratford lacked someone to work up the public interest, ta point out the advantages that it would carry in its train, and the opportunity passed, never to return. Hawera saw the opening, grasped it, and they are entitled ( to the success that attended their efforts. Stratford has a chance in its' A. i and P. Society, and the response mat is meeting the canvass for members is I a very healthy sign. It remains for the | public to make the show by exhibiting. I There is some doubt as to when the show will be held. At first it was proposed to have it in the spring, but I understand .that prominent stock breeders in other parts of the district nave intimated that they consider an autumn show preferable. An autumn show would have the advantage of being the only one of its kind in this district, and might be run in conjunction with a ram and ewe fair, the show to be held on the first two days, the fair on the third. This would bring buyers and sellers of stock from all parts of the Dominion, and in a few 7 years would leaid to Stratford being regarded as one of the leading stock sale centres of the Dominion. Mr. W. H. Climie has submitted to the Borough Council his report on the purification scheme of the water supply. It is a lengthy document. Two systems are recommended, the first with a cost of £1262, and the other £IBB7.
I hear that Mr. J. Bowater has disposed of his farm at Huiroa to a Feildirfg investor.
The Stratford Ladies' Golf Cluh are playing the Hawera ladies at Hawera to-morrow.
Several offenders against the borough by-laws appeared at the Court this morning, and were fined various amounts. The offences were, driving horses through the streets, riding bicycles on footpaths, and allowing cattle to wander.
I hear that the gate at the football match at Hawera yesterday amounted to £S3.
