Winter meeting opens to-day. Te Arai was out on his own amongst the 'chasers seen out at Gisborae. _ How many of our kill-sport politicians will be parading the lawn at Trentlium (this afternoon J , Tartar Julian piloted five winners at. Gisborne last week. Good lad! The recent Napier Park meeting re-i suited m a proat of £498-to the club. The punters' profit needs no reckoning. The going is sure to be very heavy at Trentham, and Sir Frisco, who is reputed to be a bit of a mudlark, will nave many friends in his engagements. | The champion Bobrikoff is reported to be looking line and lusty after a short) spell, and will shortly be put into wort aiain in view of 'Stralian engagements. °The Auckland horses, Le Beau *ndj Explosive are still at Green meadows, and are just being hacked about. | Loch Fyne is said to have strained a muscle in the forearm, and this will tell! against the Aucklander for some tun* This is bad luck, for forthcoming meetings will be just bristling with well- ) endowed stick events. I By far 4he most important subject before the Racing Conference will be the! question of appointing stipendiary steW-j ards. It is time the''stipes" came. Ordinary stewards are too busy watcumg the menu to see how owners and jockeys are "managing" things, and the paid official will have a busy time wneu he sets out to rout the "rummies." The Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, scored one win at Gisborne - on I Sublime. He got the nag out quickly in the Waikanae Handicap, and rode a nice "waiting" race in front. At the bend Spate came fast on the outside and looked like flying in, but Deeley's mount just had enough in hand to ward off defeat by the shortest of heads. It was a close thing, and no doubt good riding had a lot to do with the way the *oot went. The locally trained pair, Waitapu and Paritutu, went to Wellington on Tuesday, and much local interest will be centred on their running at Trentham. The weight-adjuster appears to have dealt' ieniently with them, and they may be said to have "rough" chances. Waitapu may be expected to show up better in jumpers' flat races than across the fences, but his hurdling is improving every day. He wants but one thing—a little "heart," and that Mr. O'Driscoll cannot give him. Te Arai out jumped everything at bisborne, and repeated his last year s mial wm _Gisborne Steeplechase and Second Hack Hurdles—in the simplest possible manner. He will not be seen under silk at Trentham, but goes right on to iuccarton, where he will be specially pre-| pared for the Grand National Steeple-: chase. The following riding engagements tor] the Parliamentary Handicap are reported: Penates (T. Pritchard), California (J. Griffiths), Sir Frisco (R. Hatch), North-East (W. Young), Tiptoe (S. Reid), Ngapuka (M. Ryan), Bollin (P. D. Jones), Trugauini (W. Ryan), Tawhaki (E. Lowe), Arabrosian (A. Olliver), Gold Battery (H. Gray), St. Felix (C. Jenkins). '•' 'Tis an ill wind," etc., says Lotinga s Weekly. It is astounding what unexpected occurrences do come along to level matters. As, for instance, the suspension of racing (owing to our Sportsman King's death), which prevented Maher from getting further away from little Frank Wootton during his term of punishment. That such would happen could never, by the greatest stretch of imagination, have been anticipated. Most trainers are callous to the excitement of the course, but there are exceptions, and Joyner, the famous Amurkan mentor, is one who gives very loud vent to his natural feelings. Among the favorite shouts of this very popular sportsman, when any of Ms horses promises tn win, are "Mr. Whitney, take this stake!": whilst, if they are scoring easily and don't need to be ridden out, he emphatically advises their jockeys with the exclamation: "Dont wake her (or him) up, Skcets! Don't wake her up!"
"Above tlie nom de plume of "Sport,"' a letter appeared in a recent "Press," I and the good sentiment expressed therein will be reciprocated by all "sports"' in these parlous times. He writes: "It is time the 'good old sports' of this glorious Dominion aroused themselves to the consideration of this great sporting! question, whether we shall be ruled \>y\ the minority, dictated to, and deprived of the British and Kingly sport of, horse-racing. I would recommend that a monster petition be got up at oncei throughout the Dominion, so as to get' at the rqal feeling of the public, and I feel sure the voting would be greatly in favor of retaining the grand old sport which the noisy small opposition is trying to crush." i
Personally. T lmve never mot a killsport of the "deadly" kind yet. who has anv idea of what he. howls about, tie rails against the sport because he has never been to a race meeting in his life. He is too "respectahle" to risk his mora-. ey in anything outside wild-cat mining shares and church bazaars. He hasn't the finer feelings to allow him to ap-| rcciate the splendid sight of good horses and good horsemen striving one against the other in fair racing. His bfood remains frozen at the sight. His mind does not get above bun-scrambles and such exciting events. He is to be, pitied, of course; but he has a vote like every other sane person, and it is| time the'"sports" took an interest in.i their national pastime and saved it from the frantic attacks of the kill-joy party. They have united. When will WE unite? Now is the time. Let's sweep'them into' the sea!
