A BUILDING BOOM. By Cable— Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, July 14. The report of the Labor Department shows that the number of factories in the State at the end of last wear was 4219, employing 50,500 males and 23,942 females; increases of 254 factories and 3877 employees. Only 6.8 per cent, of the employees are under 16 years of age. The report comments on the fact that the number of children who find it incumbent to work m factories is not increasing in comparison with the number of hands employed during the last five years. The hands employed in metropolitan factories increased by 17,087.,.'. Working conditions generally have improved, and the expectations of the department regarding the minimum wage have been largely realised. The report mentions that last year was the best in the history of the building trade in Sydney and suburbs. The amount expended was over £5,000,000. ' Altogether, two hundred new buildings had been erected Jn the city, and 5000 in the suburbs.
