N.Z. SHIPPING COMPANY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The New Zealand .Shipping Company's officials have no knowledge 01 the rumor re the sale of the company. COOKS AND WAITERS. Wellington, Yesterday.

A conference was held in Wellington to-day, by direction of the Arbitration Court, in connection with the Cooks and Waitets' dispute, which, after being ineffectually before the Conciliation Commissioner, was heard at a sitting of the Court here on June 13 last. Messrs. Scott and MoCullough represented the Court, and Messrs. Beveridge (Grand Hotel) and McParland (Hotel Cecil), the employers; the,-Union was represented by Mr. E. J. Carey, vioe-president, and two members of the' committee. The Court, which had heard full evidence in Wellington, referred the matter ,to this conference, with a view to an amicable settlement being arrived at. The conference lasted all day, and as it has failed to come to any satisfactory, adjustment of the dispute, the Court, which had held over its award pending present negotiations, will now have to adjudicate in the .matter.

FLOODS FEARED. Blenheim, Yesterday. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 6.40 this morning. Heavy rain yesterday and all night made the rivers rise rapidly, and it is feared that if the rain does not cease soon, parts of the country will be flooded.

PUBLIC COMPANIES' ACCOUNTS. Wellington, Yesterday. At a meeting of registered accountants, held bast night, the question as to whether the auditing of purdic companies' accounts should be restricted to public accountants, was discussed. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the general meeting ol the New Zealand Society of Accountants. The opinion was generally expressed that there should be do discrimination between members of the Society in this connection, and that the public wou'.d be better served, and just as fully protected, by extending the right to every member of the Society.

CHEMICAL FIRE ENGINE. Hastings, Yesterday. The efficacy of the chemical fire- engine was fully, demonstrated last night, when nn outbreak occurred in a twostorey block of buildings next to the Grand Hotel. The fire had burned through from the ground to the upstairs rooms, but the doors and windows were kept closed, and the chemicals quiekly extinguished the flames. Had the treatment failed, the wnole block must have gone.

RAIN AT GISBORNE. Gisborne, Yesterday. . Heavy rain fell yesterdav 4.35 inches being recorded up to 1 o'clock to-day. So far this month !).ll inches have fallen. The rivers are nil in fresh. Lnst night two lighters, belonging to the Sheep Farmers' Company, broke adrift and were swept out to sea. One. containing frozen meat, was recovered in the bav this morning by the Union Company's Tuatea, The other was washed up on the beach, with no damage done.
