FURTHER PROTESTS BY THE
CHURCHES.

The Presbytery resc ed to urge the early repeal of "the p.ivision in the; statute legalising the calling of the bookmaker, and to draw the attention of the Government to the fact that the General Assembly has expressed its opinion in favor of the abolition of the totalisator.
W r auganui, Last Night A public meeting this evening carried] the following resolution: That, in the opinion of this meeting, the spirit of gambling, with its attendant evils, so prevalent throughout the Dominion, calls for Legislative restrictions; and, with that object in view, the meeting strongly urges upon the Government the necessity of altering the present Act in the direction of repealing the provision made for licensing bookmakers. Wellington, Last Night.
The Wellington Presbytery to-day passed a resolution condemning the li-j censing c 4 bookmakers. The committee of the Anti-Gambling League has received reports of agitation in support of the legue's deputation. A record deputation is expected to be received by Sir' Joseph Ward on Monday next. It was agreed to urge, in addition to the repeal of the licensing clause in the Gaming Act. the strengthening of the powers of the police regarding street betting, so that the elimination of the bookmaker will bo com- ■ plete.
