Under the heading of "Well done, New Plymouth!" the Wanganui Herald of Thursday llast says:—Yesterday New Plymouth celebrated the arrival of .the barque Viganella, carrying 1200 tons "of cargo, from Liverpool. The Viganella is not the first vessel to arrive at the I Taranaki capital from the Old Country, but she is the first from oversea to berth at the wharf there. New Ply-1 mouth has had vessels of equal tonnage in port so many times that, so far as size'is'concerned, there is nothing extra-1 ordinary about the matter. The significance of the event lies in the fact that it marks the inauguration of direct trade with Britain, a trade which we hope will grow to large dimensions. • Most of New Zealand's oversea trade is congested in the big ports, the share of the smaller ports not being large, and the more ports we have engaging in such trade the better. If New Plymouth can develop her Home trade it will result in nothing but good for, the whole Taranaki province. Here in Wanganui, we have had Home vessels in the roadstead for many years. But we want to do the same as our Taranaki neighbors, that' is. get them into port and alongside the wharf. The local Harbor Board is doing good work towards that end, and we have no doubt that the news from New Plymouth will spur it on to a still more comprehensive harbor policy. DR.
