, The engineer submitted his monthlyreport The six-inch and water' •mains had been laid in .Curjjp vStyeet, 1 with the exception of the valve, j Portion of the eight-inch main had oecjpJ laid in Gill street. The cost of these works would exceed the estimates by £25, owing to extremely unfavorable weather and other conditions. The authorised work on water mains in Gi|l street would stop at the river.' "Tlve cost to continue this eight-inch main on to connect with the main in St. Aubyn street would be £l2B, if done before the street were formed uiid metalled. The waterworks caretaker had reported that he had visited the old works and found "everything about the same as when he last reported, except that the cattle seemed to have the run of the whole reserve, including inside the reservoir fence." He also stated that "tree planting time was r.o\v nt>, and if the Council seemed inclined to grant some trees he would willingly plant them, ias there were' very lew trees on the reserve." The continued bad weather and the urgency for the street formation of Currie street extension had made progress exceedingly difficult. Repairs to streets all over the borough had been attended, to, as quickly as possible. After some delay, caused through the non-arrival of reinforcing metal, the contractors have resumed the work in connection with Gill street bridge, and should complete it within two weeks at the latest.

Or. 'Bellringer referred to the importance of the work of taking the water mains across the new Gill street bridge. It would give an additional service in the event of an accident in the big water mains in the borough. After some discussion, Cr. Wilson moved and the Mayor seconded, that the work be authorised and proceeded with. —Carried.

Upon the motion of Crs. Gilbert and West it was decided to ask the Gas Company if it were intended to lay a main in the Gill street extension, and, if so, to suggest that the work be done before the road is metalled. WORKS COMMITTEE.

This committee recommended:—That Mr. Gayson be informed that the Council cannot see its way to accept any liability for the damage alleged to have been done to his verandah; unit Messrs. e E.
