The Labor Party has decided to opnose the Civil 'List at every st«7<\ In the House of Commons i.u incometax resolution was adopted. The Hon. Lloyd-George, in defending the Budget, made graceful reference to Mr. Joseph Chamberlain's birthday, and received cheers. He appealed to the House to support the pauper pensions. Ratepayers should contribute to the Exchequer the nmount by which they benefited. The Exchequer could not carry the whole million and a-half without postponing the invalidity of insurance schemes. The Government would make endeavors in 1911 to readjust Imperial and local taxation. Replying to those who had assailed tim in the Press for protecting the Cocoa Trust, Mr. Lloyd-George said the tax was not a new one. The Exchequer could not spare £60,000, and the impost did not benefit the manufacturer. Replying to criticism against raising a sinking fund, which was now fixed at twenty-four and a-half " millions, he claimed that this year's provision for the reduction of the national debt exceeds bv two millions the highest reduction made by the Unionist Government.
