Australia has not held a monopoly of strenuous football lately, though the instances quoted in the press have all been from that quarter. A North Auckland resident visiting Wellington informed a 'i New Zealand Times representative that quite recently at Te Koporu, on the Northern Wairoa, there was a terrific football battle between the representatives of that township and a fifteen from Arapohue. The local newspaper recoraea that it was agreed before commencing that injured men would not be replaced. One team preserved its fifteen intact, or fairly so, but the other side finished with only eleven men, the rest having retired through injuries. One man, who had his collar-bone broken, played to the call of time, in spite of the injury, and then went to the hospital, together with three colleagues who also required medical attention, the injuries including a smashed nose and dislocated collar-bone. An "Old Maid" fell from the "Bridge" down below, And the river's cold waters soon kissed; Though rescued, she was in condition "Solo" That all crept about ' the house, "Whist!" But after a "Nap" she cried, in tones sure, "I'll not provide doctors more lucre, I'll 'Beggar my neighbor,' some Peppermint Cure, And this beastly old chill I will 'Euchre!'" 23 DO THE RIGHT THING.
