PAYMENT OF SEAMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The payment of seamen on the day on which tihey sign off articles and sign on new ones was the basis of an inter- ' esting case in the Magistrate's Court to-day. The Seamen's Union proceeded against three companies, contending that, in accordance with custom, the men should be paid two days' wages for one day's work, seeing that vney worked under two sets of. articles on the one day. Defendants claimed that there was a specific contract under the Industrial Award, and one day's pay only should be given. Decision was reserved.
THE DENNISTON MTNES. Westport, Yesterday. Following is the result of the ballot at Denniston. For no strike, 201; for a strike, 210; informal, 19. WorK is proceeding as usual to-day. WORK IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, Yesterday. Comparatively few unemployed men are calling at the Labor Department's offices in quest'of work. It is officially stated that the position of unskilled workers, especially married men, is very much better now than at this time last year.
