SPORTING NOTES, (By "Moturoa") Poor old Jeff! Gisborne Steeple to-day. ' Bismarck has accepted for the Parliamentary. After the fight: John-sing; Jeff-freeze, Reported that Bob Barlow will pilot St. Lumsden in Trentham engagements. Now that the coon with the golden smile is on top it is quite on the cards that "The Professor" will go into training at once. The Auckland 'chaser has made many friends on the Trentham tracks, and does not read badly with list in the <big steeple. Grand National weights appear in today's issue, and more than usual interest appears to be taken in this year's leaping events. A moderate crowd are engaged in the Winter Oats at Gisborne, The top- , weight, Lamsdorff, is set to carry lOst 41b, and the much-raced son of Stepniak is said to be in the best of condition.

Wimmera, who has been on the easy list the last few weeks, had declined Wellington engagements, but figures in the Winter Cup and National Hurdles. He will get a fair load in the last-mentioned race.

The Hawke's Bay Metropolitan Committee last week endorsed the rest-of-the-season disqualification presented to the Levin jockey, H. Carmont, by the stewards of the Napier Park Racing Club after the Sir Frisco incident The well-known Maoriland 'chaser Leeside was destroyed recently alter, sustaining serious injuries while contesting the steeplechase at the Victorian A.T.C. meeting. The Euroclydon gelding ate a lot of good oats in his time, but his Turf career was nothing to get excited about.

It appears that Equitas was never entered for the Caulfield Cup. The twelvefurlong journey would find the sprinter's weak spot, nothing surer, and there is no danger of him taking on anything over a mile yet awhile. King Hippo figures in both steeplechases at (risborne to-day. After his bold showing at the Napier Park meeting the Aucklander is expected to give a good exhibition in future engagements. If reserved for the Trial Steeple he will probably carry a ton of Auckland money. Last year the Gisborne Steeple only attracted a brace of runners, and after an unexciting race Te Arai (11.6) won easily from Mozart (10.3). To-day's race has drawn the following acceptances:— Te Arai 11.13, Reservoir Halving Hippo 11.0, Mozart 10.0, Swartmoor 10.0, and Waiohika 0.7. The top-weight is quoted a firm favorite.

According to the IPatea Press, Murt. Gardiner has expressed himself aa well satisfied with the •weights apportioned out to Crucinella by the Australian handicappers. The mare will be taken across very shortly, together with Koran (who is very well), a promising maiden colt by HancUome Jack—Ruimeara. The young horse carries Mr.' Mcßeth'a colors, and about twelve months ago was reckoned a coming champion, but unfortunately he broke down. If Gardiner get* him quite right again he should win a race or two across the pond. Although, strictly speaking, there is no le«jil betting off racecourses, Diapolo is quoted favorite for'the New Zealand Cup. The law allows that statement. It does not prevent a paper saying t * Diabolo is quoted at 15 to l or 10 to 1 before the race, but once the event w over vou dare not mention that the prad paid *£s, or whatever it may be. To a person with any sense at all, all this seems absurd, and so it is. This is a sample of the gaming legislation as manufactured in the House of Representative*
