King George gave audience to Captain Scott, and presented his portrait to be carried in the Terra Nova, to 'be afterwards hung on the walls of an Antarctic hut. The King was gratified to learn that the three scientists accompanying the expendition (an a Canadian, and an Englishman) were 1851 exhibition scholars. COPYRIGHT CONFERENCE. FIRE IN LUMBER YARD. : Received July 6, 9.55 p.m. Ottawa, July 6. Sparks from a locomotive fired lumber yards at Arnprior, Ontario. A million dollars' worth of sawn lumber was destroyed. Thirteen hundred delegates are attending the International Railway congress here. The deliberations are largely of a technical character. SCALDED TO DEATH. London, July a Four LascaV firemen \vho s werfe inside a steamer's boiler at South; Shields, repairing it, were scalded to death by a sudden rush of steam. GERMAN OFFICIAL EXECUTED. 1 Santiago, July 5. Ex-Chancellor Beckett , has been executed here for the murder oi the porter attached to the German Consulate.
