WAITARA NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Waitara, Last Night. The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee'was held on Monday evening, there being present: -Messrs. Pearce (chairman), Wheatley, Ford, Johnston, Trim and Jenkins. The headmaster's report, showing that the roll now stood at 299, and the average! attendance at 264.3, was read. The master complained that the school was. not receiving the attention it should from tlie caretaker, also that the examination of P.T.'s was being held on Monday—The Y.C.. said there was cause for complaint in regard to the cleanliness of the school. Mr. Wheatley said «»mplaints had been made in regard to the removal of mghtsoil.—'The contractor attended, and explained that lie had, as far as possible, carried out his contract. —It was decided that, owing to the additional work requiring attention, the contractor be paid at tne rate of £lO per year, conditionally on his giving bettej attention and keeping the outhouses more cleanly.—lt was decided that, owing to the wing posts being dangerous, the swings be cut down, to avoid any accident, and to apply to the Board for new ones.—lt was resolved to repair several of the fences. —The custodian's attention is to be called to the I master's report, and he is to be informed that more care must be taken in future. —It was resolved to obtain five loads of metal for the school grounds-. After passing accounts to the amount of £1 14s the meeting adjourned. The usual monthly meeting of the j Borough Council takes place this even-| in£.
It is wonderful how many people knew Johnson would beat Jeffries —that is, after the result reached here.. Amongst the Maoris, the prevailing idea was that color would win, and a section of them are quite jubilant. "Kapai te prack fella every time" is the usual mode of expressing their feelings. Although the Freezing Works close down some five weeks earlier than was the case last year, it will be found that the export of beef will be much larger than at any time previously. The reason of the early closing is the fact that more butchers were available to do the work.
