STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. For the male portion of the residents of Stratford the one subject of conversation is the Johnson-Jeffries light. Every other topic, even the sheep-steal-ing case, has become overshadowed by the pugilistic encounter between ihe representatives of the white and black races. Ihe chance of the respective pugilists is keenly argued, the superior ability of Johnson being set off against the hitting powers ana strength of Jeffries. But what is causing the most debate is when does the light come off? Opinions are varied, and if in i any shop or on the street a small crowd of men are gathered together, it is a safe bet that they are hammering at this question. Atlases, diaries and all kinds of books have been produced in support of the respective contentions that have been advanced, but no finality has been reached. In the meantime the public are wondering when they will receive the news of the result. A man named James Higgins, who has several previous convictions against him, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment this morning by Messrs. R. Ward and C. D. Sole, J's.P., for being a rogue and a vagabond. / j Mr. T. Mercer leaves Stratford on a I holiday for Queensland on Wednesday, i Thursday will be pay day on the railway works. j A match for £6O a side has been arranged between Scott and Robertson. It will take place at Stratford on August 4. It seems that the passenger traffic from Te Wera on Saturdays is in excess of the estimation of the Railway Department, if the crowded carriages are a criterion. Passenger's are complaining that though thev have to pay their fares, their chances of a seat are small.
