INGLEWOOD NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Inglewood, Saturday. The much talked of concert in aid of the Fire Brigade funds, was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening. There was a good attendance, although the weather doubtless kept many intending patrons away. The first part of the evening consisted of a varied programme of vocal and instrumental items. Although all the items were excellent the only one to. receive an encore was Mr. W. J. Matthew's song, which was rendered in his usual breezy style, and received a great reception. The audience, i although appreciative throughout, reserved the fullest measure oi their j praise for the performers in the fawe. A duet by Mrs. Hood and Mr. J. H. Rowe came in for well merited applause as did a violin solo by Master Cottier. Appended is the programme: Selection from operas, Mr. Cottier's orchestra; song, Mrs. Richardson; song, Mr. Frewin; violin solo, Master Cottier; duet, Mrs. Hood and Mr. Rowe; song, Mr. W. J. Matthews (encored); song, Mrs. Roberts; song, Mr. R. J. Frewin; I selection, Cottier's orchestra. The second portion of the programme consisted of a, farce "Ici on Parle Francais." The cast of characters was as follows: Major Regulas Rattan, Mr. Currie; Victor Dubois, Mr. J. H. Rowe; Mr. Spriggins, Mr. R. J. Frewin; Mrs., Sprigging, Miss Papps; Anglina (their j daughter), Mts. Jacomh; Julia (wife of Major Rattan), Mrs. H. Thomson; Anna! Maria (maid of all work). Mrs. C. Mar-1 tin. All the actors were in fine fettle and rounds of applause were frequent and prolonged. Miss Papps, as Mrs. Spriggins, and Mr. J. H. Rowe, as Victor Dubois, made the hits of the evening, although all the acting was for above the usual standard of amateurs. The ladies all received an enthusiastic reception, while Messrs. J. Currie and R. J. Frewin were well up to their usual form and more than retained their well earned popularity before the Inglewood footlights. The'dresses were stood, as jwas the staging, although, since the scene was a drawing room one only, ninch wenerv was not required. Every thing passed off without a hitch and the 'promoters are to be congratulated on 'mittHia such a. first class performance before'the audience. The funds of the ■ Fire Brigade should benefit to some conrsiderable" extent by the evening's performance.
