A ROUGH PASSAGE TO 'FRISCO. The steamer Century, which left Newcastle for San Francisco on .JMarch 23, with 6432 tons of coal, and arrived at her destination on April 23, had a perilous voyage. With lifeboats stove in, rigging; and deck superstructure broken, the Century dragged through the Golden Gate and dropped anchor. For twentysix days the steamer struggled against typhoon, hurricane and high seas, until lines, castings, ladders, spars and lifeboats were twisted and broken and part of her harwood lumber cargo was overboard.
Carrying 5500 tons of coal below decks and a heavy load of spars and hardwood, the Century encountered a hurricane five days out from Newcastle, and for days her deck was almost submerged. When in the thick of the storm Captain Dow,nie spoke the Inverkip, which left New--1 castle a day ahead of the Century. The Inverkip was making no progress, and was 'being- washed fore and aft. By using oil Captain Dbwnie saved most of his deck cargo, but had to keep life-lines on hie crew during the entire trip. The Century, which belongs to the Howard Smith and Co.'s Australian mail, line, took to San Francisco the first Newcastle'coal since the termination of the miner's strike. Later advices shoti that the Inverkip arrived on April 26.
The Rosamond arrived from Onehunga on Saturday morning, and sailed a few hours later for Wellington with 32- tons of cargo. Captain C.
