J A match on Thursday jut could' : a < hardly he described as having been pj*y« ] . ed amidst the cheering andyeUing of 1 the crowds, for the spectator—no mis- - take, really, for it is in the singular—-( ' V was not known to have opened hia § mouth to give one word of encourage- ■'•',-? ment during the progress of the game! 'M *£n endeavor is being made to arrange '.' * a match for next Thursday between teams representing the southern division and one representative of Opunake. '; Kaponga is proposed as the meeting ' •place. It is hardly likely that the Taranaki Association will put in a challenge lor the shield this year, as Wellington, the present holder, should it win eack match, will l:o playing challenges right up to September. It is considered mm , cult to get a team away at such time of the year. Enthusiasm personified! A couple of hookey-ites on Tuesday travelled from Opunake in the teeth or the driving rain —a distance of forty miles—to attend a meeting'of the Association. There were also delegates from Eltham and Inglewood, but these, with the secretary, were the only one 'who allowed their sporting instincts to prevail over the weather. Hockey is very strong this season around Opunake. Six teams are already . Competing for Hie local trophy, and much enthusiasm is -Jiown. Whereas it is alalmost impossible to get a full football team together to play a match away from home, the hockey teams are always full. A ladies' club is mooted and a ] meeting was to have been held this week. The game has been introduced into the schools and the boys have taken up the oame with z«t. The future of the game ?s very promising along the coast. f It was a very decisive win that New ■(Plymouth had over Inglewood Bon i Thursday—nine goals to 1. Such a vie- j tory must be jovful tjo members of the j town club, for the latter, anticipating • > some difficulty in getting a team to- J gether through various causes, had ask- | ed the country team to postpone the ."< mateb, but to thw they would not agree. 'j Accordingly N'cw Plymouth J*d to "rope A in" one or two old-timers and new mem- 4 •bens and acquired sufwient strength to i defeat their opponents. Inglewood, whw ~q apparently had a number of new play jj ers in the team, played without com* * bination, this .being the principal con* , J tributing factor to their signal defeat. :M Stratford defeated Eltham on Thar* . ■'*& day by 4 goals to nil, T.
