Mr. W. H. Ferris has been appointed Chief Hemp Grader for the Dominion. He has been twenty-five years in the industry.—Press wire. Mr. Pierce C. Freeth, editor of the New Zealand Times, has been granted three months' leave of absence. He will probably visit Australia.
A London cable states that Earl Grev is returning to Canada, where he will probably remain till May, when he will be succeeded bv the Duke of Connausht.
Miss McGregor, a missionary from India, occupies the pulpit at the'Baptint Church, Gill-street, to-morrow morning, and the Methodist Church, Queen-street, in the evening.

At St. Mary's Church on Thursdov Mr. Thomas .Montague Averv, eldest son of Mr. Thomas Avery, of New Plv. mouth, was married tJ Miss Queenie Bennetto, only daughter of the late Mr. Walter Bennetto, of London. The Rev. F. G. Evans, vicar of St. Mary's, officiated.
Mr. S. Hill, who has beer, a resident of New Plymouth for many years, during the greater portion of which he was Government Valuer, was last night presented with a purse of sovereigns by his New Plymouth friends. Mr. Hill leaves for Wellington by the mail train this morning.
