SPORTING.

(By "Moturoa.")

TURF TOPICS.

Gisborne races next week. Waikaraka, who Ims been spelling, is' to be put over hurdles shortly. Big loads and heavy going were against Oxton at the Hawke's Bay meetings, but the Karamu jumper is improving every race and is sure to pay his way shortly. Woolloomooloo, who has suffered through indifferent riding since landing in the Dominion, has been nominated for the Australian Hurdle Race. Kiatere also figures in the Australian Steeple, and if the weights suit this pair will cross the Tasman shortly. Old! Nero, who did Mr. T. Carson winning turns at Hastings and at Napier Parle, pulled up slightly lame after racing at the latter place, and bis Gisborne Steeplechase engagement, which looked "pie" on paper, bears a doubtful aspect. Which is bad luck for Mr. Carson, who has shown great perseverance with the gamey-legged lepper. \ From all account: Tiptoe is galloping well at Hawera an'', barring accidents, will ibe seen undir the colors at Tr6ntham and at Rierarton. A Win in that quarter is long overdue. , Last season's crack jockey, B. Hatch, piloted the Benzoin gelding Brasenose in each of his victorie. at Ashburton last week. Corazon jumys big country poprly as yet, but with a little experience he promises to turn out a very useful chaser. He has more pace than the ordinary run of jumpers, and with improved fencing a National should not 'be beyond him. Hawke's Bay sports have it that he will prove a worthy successor to that good horse 'Nadador.

At the Quensland Turf Club's June gathering the Maoriland-bred Miss Jftiscbief gathered in a mile race with 9.13 up in,,the; good time of 141%) and won pulling up by three lengths. Sportsmen generally were pleased to see the Feilding trainer, Mr. H. Jackson, rewarded by a win with the hurdler Arclight. This horse has (promised to win for some time and, repeatedly let his supporters down with the bump Which spells financial, loss all the time. The six-year-old Finland gelding White -Cockade was sent out a yery warm favorite the second day at Ashburton, and gave his backers a rare fright. In the last couple of furlongs he came with a splendid run, however, and finishing strongly just managed to beat Fandango home by a length. Southern Cross, who shaped well on the opening day, 'jumped slovenly and was never da'ngerouai' .They j«re not long in trying Waipuna over 9JOKS. The old fellow was given a run in the hurdle- race at Port Adelaide and although palpably green at the game he showed marked cleverness on Ms feet, and, fencing carefully, finished close up in fourth position. With more schooling it appears probable that the ex-Auckiander will take rank as a good winner over hurdles. Oroniform, a four-year-old gelding ot fashionable breeding, being by Multiform —Helen Faucit, got amongst the winners at Ashburton. On the first day he got out slowly but made up a heap of ground 1 and ran Brasenose —who is no waster—to a close half-length. On the second day he quickly took a prominent place in the running and ran in an easy winner from Windward, Lady de Verc, and a big field. Favoritism for the New Zealand Cup is just a matter of environment. In Auckland Master .Soult finds most admirers; in Wellington they are picking at Diabolo, Bridge, Lady Lucy and Master Soult; and in Canterbury, Bridge, Diabolo, Tngoda. Danube and Master Soult find most favor. Needless to say, Hawera sports reckon it is only a matter of health for Coroneted. But there isn't much money in Tarana'ki for any : thing so risky as, long-shot wagering. Men of the cow province like to »ee their fancies running, and that's where they show their wisdom, too. |
