The Senate of the National University of Ireland decided that the Irish language shall .be a compulsory subject for matriculation. The motion was passed by nineteen to thirteen votes. The decision was due to pressure by the Sinn; fein organisation upon the county councils, who control the rate scholarships, worth £60,000;
