PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, June 25. Monday hag been proclaimed a public holiday for the Prince of Wales' birthday. • NEW ISLAND STEAMER SERVICE. Sydney, June 25. The steamer Matunga has sailed to Papua, inaugurating the island service under contract between Burns, Philp and Co. and the Federal Government. The company intend to place three new steamers in the service. THE iPECK TRAGEDY. Melbourne, June 25. Peck has been -formally charged with murdering his wife. Evidence showed' that his wife's wounds could not have been self-inflicted. FINANCING NEW STEAMER SERVICE. Melbourne, June 25. The State Cabinet has declined -to entertain the proposal to take shares in the shape of loan money in the proposed new Australian steamship company which is to be known as the Merchant Shippers' Line, and to trade between Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The conference of sugar-growers carried resolutions in favor of the continuance and extension of the bounty system and the increase of excise duty, so as to prevent colored producers remaining in the industry. EARTH TRiEMOR. Port Darwin, June 25. A distinct earth tremor was experienced yesterday. SURVEY OF SOUTHERN SEAS. Melbourne, June 25. During the Wakefield's search for the Waratah, Lieutenant Seymour carried out surveys of the localities visited, with a view to aiding navigators of these rarely visited parts.
