Mr. and Mrs. John Andrews, very old residents of Huirangi, were farewelied on Wednesday evening by the settlers of the district, and were the recipients of a silver tea and coffee service. Sir Charles Furness has been elected M.P, frr Hartlepool by a majority of 100 over Mr. Gritten. The election wns rendered necessary by the January poll being declared void owing to irregularities. Sir C. Farness's majority at the general election was 777. On Thursday evening 'Messrs Sargood r Son and Ewen's local staff spent a social evening, and during its progress Mr. W. Bigelow presented Mr. Bruce Lewis with a leather suit-ease, with suitably inscribed presentation plate, on behalf of the staff. Mr. Lewis severs his connection with the firm at the end of the mouth to take up a position as theNorth Island representative of Messrs, (""onestake, Compton and Co., of Manchester.

In the course of an interesting article •n the London Daily News on King George V., Mr. W. T. Three Government veterinary surgeons for New Zealand were appointed this week through the High Commissioner—Messrs. E. C. Howard, R. Finch and W. D. H. Edwards (writes a London correspondent under date May 13). air, Edmund Howard, who is thirty-one years of age and unmarried, is in private practice at Nairn, where he also acts as meat inspector and sanitary inspector. He is a graduate of Dick Vet* terinary College, Edinburgh, and has been connected with meat inspection for five years. Mr. Richard Finch, of Chorlov. Lnncs, is thirty years old, and unmarried. He has been for the past seven years assistant to Mr. A. • Povitt, at Preston, Lanes. He holds the diploma in veterinary state medicine of Victoria University, Manchester. Mr. William Watkin Herbert Edwards is in private practice at Donvgarth, Hay, near Hereford. He is thirty-four years old, and married, with one child. He served m the South African Constabulary from 1001 to 1004. and gained experience in meat inspection both there and in the London meat markets, AU three are members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
