FIRES.
OUTBREAK AT WAIROA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wairoa, Tuesday. A fire occurred at midnight and totally destroyed two shops owned by Mr. .Powdrell and occupied'iby Lambert, tailor, Carr, watchmaker, and an office occupied by Green, solicitor. A shop and billiard-room owned by Jonson were also destroyed. The insurances amounted to £1035. Carr was not insured. HOMESTEAD DESTROYED. Timaru, Tuesday. The homestead at Holme Station, Pareora, Mr. A. E. Elworthy's residence, was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morning. The house contained about forty rooms, and very little furniture was saved. The fire originated in the kitchen, and is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney. The lire had a strong hold when it was discovered, and spread so rapidly that the children had to be taken out in their nightclothes.
