THE BOY SCOUTS
KING GEORGE AS PATRON. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, June 20. King George has consented to become a patron of the Boy Scouts. In the course of a letter which Mr. H. Dempsey, headmaster of the Central School, received yesterday morning from Lieutenant-General Sir R. S. BadenPowell, the famous founder of the "Boy Scouts" say's:— "I am delighted to hear that the boys of New Plymouth are taking to scouting. By so doing they are joining a great brotherhood which extends all over the British parts of the globe, and which has already won for itself a name for handiness, honor and helpfulness to others. New Zealanders in the South African war were specially conspicuous for their pluck and bravery, and scouting, among other things, teaches a fellow how to i behave in a tight place, and I feel sure, therefore, that the lads of the Dominion will take to it well, and will enjoy the fun of it. I only, hope that some day I may be able to visit New Zealand, and see how they have got on. Meantime, wishing them every success, I am, etc., Robert Baden-Powell."
