In a letter received at the last meeting of the Harbor Board, Captain McBeth, in command of the new dredge Paritutu, stated that he expected to have his vessel in Wellington on June 21st. With the rough weather experienced during the past week or two it was hardly expected that the vessel would arrive to time. However, a wire was received by the Harbor Board yesterday stating that the Paritutu had arrived in Wellington at 2 p.m. It speaks well for the reliability of the little vessel that her captain was able to estimate so accurately her steaming possibilies, in spite of adverse weather conditions. The Paritutu is to go on the Patent Slip at the southern port for cleaning and general overhaul and should arrive here early next week. THE ROSAMOND. ' The Rosamond arrived at Wellington at 10 a.m. yesterday and was to have left in the afternoon for Picton, Nelson and New Plymouth. She will arrive I here as usual on Thursday.

THE iBTDRADEVI. Auckland, Tuesday.—The (Indradew, which was several days overdue from Liverpool, arrived this morning. She met bad weather after passing the Cape of Good Hope and several minor breakdowns in the engine-room also delayed her. After passing Tasmania she encountered a cyclone, lasting four days, and was hove'4o for ten hours. These delays account for her late arrival.

LIGHTING THE COAST. Wellington, Tuesday.—About three months ago the Marine Department sent a circular to the Merchant Service Guild, asking for an opinion regarding the mist suitable site for another lighthouse on the New Zealand coast, and also whether it was advisabde to remove the Mokihiuau ilight to one of the Chicken Islands off the entrance to Wkangarei. Captain D. J. Watson, secretary of the Guild, has interviewed all masters of vessels which have visited Wellington since the issue of the circular, and he finds the majority favor the establishmet of a lighthouse on Flat Point, about 40 miles north of Cape Palliser. A few captains, consider there should be a light at Castlepoint, and two or three others hold that if there is to be another lighthouse on the New Zealand coast it should be erected at the .Kidnappers. The proposal to remove the Mokihinau light meets with the approval of most shipmasters interviewed in Wellington.

A novel method of recovering a sunken caiwo has been adopted by the United Stales Sted Company. A 'large magnet V-k feet in diameter and weighing AW* pounds, has .been employed in raising kegs of nails from a barge that was' sunk in the Mississippi river, near New Orleans. The magnet raised .five or six kegs at a time, or about a ton at each lift The advantage of this method was that it avoided breaking open the;kegs,, as would have been the case had a dredge been used. The magnet is soon to be used for raising a sunken load of woven wire and also of steel, baling strips.
