STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Saturday iNight. The conference between the committee set up by the Borough Council and the Domain Board to see if some arrangement could not be made whereby the finances would be forthcoming to improve the Domains was held on Saturday. After considerable arguhient, the Board carried a resolution, that the Board was not prepared to hand over the Domains to the Borough Council, but •was willing that the borough should have representation on the Board*, provided the Council will make a yearly griffft to the Board's funds, the amou'n't to- be agreed, upon. Though no official antiouftcemcffts' have 'been made, it is expected' that the Hon. T. Mackenzie will arrive in Sftrat-j ford by special train at aboiit rtiidday on Monday to formally open the railway line to Te Wera. the settlers of the East Road have arranged for a banquet to the Minister, to wh'k'ft members' of the Stratford Borough Council, County Council, and Chamber of Commerce have been invited.
Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P., consequent on' the Minister's visit to Te Wera, has postponed his address to have been delivered' at the Town Hall on Monday night till Wednesday., A sign of the arrival of winter and the mud morasses that do duty in the ■backblocks for .roads was supplied this morning, when the mail coach running between Te Wera and Whangamomona was unable to cross the saddle, and the mails had to be packed across. That winter has set in, the keenness of the air and the bitterly cold wind leaves no doubt. The beautiful weather of Thursday was not for long, for on Friday it blew from the south, and storms of hail fell at intervals. To-day it has been bitterly cold, and though pay-day for the factories, there were notmany people in town. Mi-. G. N'. Curtis is leaving next month for Queensland, where he proposes spending the- winter. In a letter to a Stratford resident, Father T'racey states that he was granted a private audience bv his Holiness the Pope, who conversed with him for a considerable time on matters affecting the welfare of the Church in this country.
