A PERJURY CHARGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Friday. John Merwood was to-day committed for trial on a charge of perjury arising out of evidence given in an affiliation case heard here on 12th April. YOUNG WOMAN IN TROUBLE. Gisborne, Friday. A young woman, Mary Josephine Malani, alias Josephine Marcella Morse, was before the Court to-day upon a charge of bigamy in that, being married to William Henry Malam, she went through the form of marriage with Percy Bowering Morse. She was remanded to appear at Rotorua, EXPOSING INFECTED FRUIT. Wellington, Friday. William George Blair, fruit-grower, of Sydenham, Christchurch, was charged at the Court to-day with exposing infected fruit for sale in a Wellington auction mart. The fruit consisted of pears infected with pear scab or black spot. The inspector who condemned the fruit said Blair had had several warning notices sent to him. The Magistrate said it was necessary, in order to secure a conviction, that defendant should have known of the condition of the fruit before he sent it; as no evidence was adduced to that effect he dismissed the information without prejudice. THE SALE OF WINE IN NO-LICENSE DISTRICTS. Wellington, Friday. An important point which has a bearing on licensing matters and the New Zealand Avine industry was argued in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon before the Chief Justice. The question involved, arising out of the case Miller v. •Lamb, was whether sales, of New Zealand wine came under the exemptions provided in section 3 of the Licensing Act permitting the sale of wine in a nolicense district. Defendant in the case manufactured and sold the wine in Masterton. At his own request he was prosecuted and the charge against him for having committed a breach of the Licensing Act was dismissed. The Crown, desiring a higher ruling on the point, decided to appeal. Mr. J. W. Salmond, Solicitor-General, together with Mr. H. H. Ostler of the Crown Law Office, appeared for appellant. Mr. C. P. Skerret't, K.C., and Mr. F. Kelly were for defend-! ant. His Honor reserved judgment.
