LEVANTING HUSBANDS

At the meeting in connection with the Queen's Jubilee Fund, Mr. Mackellar stated that 20 per cent, of the cases relieved were those ■ where husbands had deliberately deserted their families. This was in accordance with the experience of the Children's Protection Act Committee. Of 611 women the Committee was asisting, 38 had been deserted by their husbands. A rigorous law was needed to deal with deserters. He sxupported the proposal of tihe New Zealand Government that the Australian States and New Zealand should pass similar laws to deal with the matter.
