THE ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE
NO SWEEPING DESTRUCUTION. SEVEN THOUISANID PEOPLE FLEE. By Cable—Press Association—Oopyrrght Rome, June 8. The King and Queen are at Avellino. The latter visited the hospital and the King made the round of the villages aifeeted. There-is no sweeping destruction such as occurred in the terrible Messina earthquake. The fallen houses are mostly old and telly ibuilt, as are the churches that were wrecked. In Naples the disaster is popularly attributed to St. Janrnirius, whose blood is preserved in the cathedral. It did not liquify according to the tra Titional miracle, and a great procession is being organised to appease the offended saint. .Most of the houses at Culitri are cracked, especially those built on the hillside and crowning the slope. Twenty-four bodies have been recovered. Seven thousand people have fled from their homes. Fanatics attacked several American missionaries who visited Culitri, alleging that they were responsible for the disaster. Soldiers rescued them.
