CANADA AND U.S.A.

TRADE RELATIONS. OANIADA RELUCTANT TO NEGOTIATE. By Cable Press Association—Copyrigli Received June 9, 11.40 p.m. London, June 9. The Times' Toronto correspondent confidently asserts that Canada will enter with hesitation and reluctance into trade negotiations with the United States. Two or three of Sir Wilfrid Laurier'a Ministers favor a wide reciprocity, and these are supported by an element amongst fanners and certain newspapers, which (have always been Continental rather than Imperial in outlook. It as believed that Sir Wilfrid Lauver and a majority of his colleague? are willing to consider nothing beyond r.<rprocity on .the products of the soil, and are indisposed to reduce duties lo the manufacturers until they see a material reduction in the American manufacturing schedule. They therefore lo not consent ito free trade in such a uitio of materials as can be used to attract American industries to Canada. A correspondent particularly emphasises that Canada will not enter into an agreement with the United States flat is seriously inimical to preference Britain.
