STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Chvn Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The public who attended the Robert-son-Smith wrestling match in the Town Hall last night could not complain at the quantity of the exhibition provided, though doubtless there" was not the same satisfaction expressed at the "spectacular quality." The reason was very obvious. Both men wanted to win, and Robertson, nearly two stone lighter than his opponent, was not prepared to "mix" thfngs with the stalwart lad from the Forty-mile Bush. He acted largely on 1 the defensive, awaiting an opportunity to get a hold which would result in a fait. Smith was also cautious, and, knowing his opponent's cleverness, was not taking risks. For two and a-lklf Hours the men wrestled without a fall, and as it appeared that if the match was to be finished it would have to' go cm for the night it was agreed that it should be a draw. Prior to the principal event a competition for medals presented .by Smith and Robertson was held, Hino proving that winner. It is' now said that the Te Wera section of the railway line will 'be taken over on Monday/ The new stationmaster, Mr; Johnston, formerly at Waioru, has arrived, and proceeded to Te Wera to-day. Through a lioTse he was riding stepping on a stone and falling, Mr. H. Jones, of the County Stables, had the misfortune to break his collarbone today. The result of : the Toko Farmers' Union turnip-growing: competition was as follows:—J. M. Martin; (Huiroa), 72 points.; 23 tons 14cwt 3qr to the acre, first: W. H. Were (Toko), (i!)'points, 23 tons 12cwt 3qr to the acre, second; A. Campbell (Toko road), 62'/. .points, 21 tons 7cwt lqr to the acre, tliird'. A start will be made with the laying of the lines through the Pohokura tunnel next week. Mr. J. Bell, of the staff of the local branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., who has been transferred to Timani, was presented by his colleagues with: a very handsome silver-mounted pipe. The presentation was made by the manager, Mr. Hewitt, who \vished* Mr. Bell every success in his new sphere. Mr. Bell leaves by tomorrow morning's mail train for Timam.
