IMPERIAL POLJTICS.
OPENING OF PARLIAMENT. THE VETO BATTLE. NEWSPAPERS ON THE SITUATION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received June 8, 12.5 a.m. London, June 7. In view of the House of Commons meeting to-morrow, the newspapers are discussing the constitutional crisis. The Times states that King Edward's death has induced a spirit of sober reflection, which is in sharp contrast to the earlier controversial exaggeration. The Telegraph suggests that the Government must initiate a compromise in the negotiations. The Daily News says that the Ministerial majority is still'a majority of concentration against the Lords. The idea of a "Round Table conference" gains increasing support from the Liberals, and the Government may he prepared to invite Unionists to a' frank discussion of the whole situation. Cabinet is approaching the question in a united spirit, implying that there will be no sacrifice of essential principles. The Commons have complete control of finance and predominance over ordinary legislation. The Chronicle says that owing to the business immediately in hand occupying the House of Commons until August,' the Veto battle must be deferred, "but will be resumed on our part with ardour before the end of the year. Liberalism must fight the House of Lords or die." The Daily Mail says that an autumn session is likelier than a compromise. THE POSITION OF THE UNIONISTS. Received June 7. 10.10 p.m. London, June 7. Mr. T. P. O'Connor. M.P.. interviewed Mr. Lloyd-George before and after yesterday's Cabinet meeting. The Standard, referring to the interview, states that the Unionists have already conceded as much as possible, though the party might conceivably agree to withdraw the money Bills. The Lords' jurisdiction was under an unassailable guarantee against such measures going beyond the finances of the current year.
