WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent). At a sitting of Justices, Messrs. Jenkins and Pearce, James M. Douglas and Kobeirt Oliver were each fined 5s for drunkenness cm Saturday, the latter being also mulcted in a further sum of 10s for resisting the police. A conference between the Borough Council and the Harbor Board was held on Monday afternoon for the purpose of| endeavoring to arrive at a finality over, the bridge. The Council's contention as that no, other charge than the expense of re-letting and survey should he debited to the revenue before deducting the agreed o per cent adminis-! tration charges. After considerable dis-i cussion it was .pointed out by the Board! that any fear on the part of the Coun-I cil that unnecessary expense would be incurred by the Board in the general administration of the sections was groundless. It was quite as important to the Board as to the Council that such expenses should be kept to a minimum. The chairman .pointed out that such a, course was the only one that the Board could work on soundly. Tt was then I mutually agreed that the Bill, as sub-' mitted to the Council at its last meet-! rag, be adopted. I In the course of conversation with a! settler from Makarakia, he informed me that there wa-s groat fear that the. instructions of the Minister to proceed! with the making of the Kiwi road would | not be proceeded with during this season, owing to the fact, that winter was not a good time to go on with road work. He pointed out the fallacy of •being proceeded with above Awakino, where settlers were few and local bodies received no revenue. The roadworks were of use to only a few men with large holdings, and the"idea was that the big man was considered before the small settler. If what he said is true, then an explanation from the powers that be is very necessary. Moreover,, it appears' that plans have been drawn up for the Kiwi road, and apparently there is no need for further survey;' and as the road is practically a standstone one, the fact of its being winter time should not; prejudice the claims of the long suffer-! ii/g settlers. .If men can be taken off! other works and .placed in the Awakino! district, then surely some consideration! should be shown to those who have battled bard for the past fifteen years in the Makarakia. Perhaps it is the same old story—"to him that hath shall be given more than he hath."

Milk supplies at the various factories are tiow showing a decided faJling-off, but from all accounts cows will come . 'ito profit much earlier during the coming season than has been the case previously.

The work of laying the reticulation is proceeding apace. Directors of the company were down inspecting on Friday last.
